Side Board Tech - Looking At Some Possibilities

Ok so I thought I'd cover some cards I think should see more side deck play. There are a lot of cards that decks do depend upon to do well. When I talk about each card I'll give explanations and so on. Anyways without further ado, lets get this show on the road!

Drastic Drop Off
Counter Trap Card
Activate only when your opponent adds a card(s) from their Deck t
o their hand, including drawing a card(s). Your opponent discards 1 of those cards.

Drastic Drop Off, why you may ask. Well consider what most decks use:

Allure of Darkness
Destiny Draw
Solar Recharge
Charge of the Light Brigade
Gladiator Proving Ground
Gladiator Beast's Respite
Elemental Hero Stratos
Reinforcement of the Army
Sangan
Fortune's Future
Trade-In
The list goes on folks. They are all cards that you see in just about any competitive deck right now. Most of the top decks right now have their main cards added in the list above. D-Hero based decks use Allures, Destiny Draws and Reinforcement of the Army with Elemental Hero Stratos. Lightsworns use Charge of the Light Brigade and Solar Recharge. Gladiator Beasts have Elemental Hero Stratos(if the player uses more than 1 Elemental Hero Prisma), Gladiator Proving Ground, Gladiator Beast's Respite and Gladiator Beast Samnite. Just about any deck has Sangan, Fortune Ladies are sure to be big and they have Fortune's Future and Fortune Lady Water. Trade-In is probably the least likely card you'll come across but fits in Hopeless Dragon and that's pretty much it for competitive decks. All of the decks I've just mentioned and the cards they use either draw cards or add cards from the deck. Drastic Drop Off is much better than Drop Off because of this, and the fact it can be activated at any time, like a regular Drop Off during the Draw Phase or at any time during either players turn. The cards I've listed are cards that the decks I've mentioned depend upon to give them what they need. Charge of the Light Brigade, you waste 3 cards to add 1 Lightsworn monster to your hand from the deck, similar to Reinforcement of the Army. Drastic Drop Off makes you drop the very card you just added from your deck to the graveyard, you just wasted a card. Now in Lightsworns I suppose if you mill Necro Gardna or Wulf, Lightsworn Beast off Charge of the Light Brigade's effect, you don't lose so much. Draw cards I really don't have to explain, the sad part however is Drastic Drop Off basically makes your opponent -1. Discard to activate, lose the card they activate, they draw 2, you play Drastic Drop Off, they're forced to discard one of the cards they drew. That puts them pretty much back where they started minus the card they discarded for the cost, that's pretty bad. So you can pretty much tell why I think this card would be excellent tech for side decks.

Royal Oppression
Continuous Trap Card
Pay 800 Life Points to negate a Special Summon of a monster and the effect of a card that Special Summons a monster and destroy it. Both you and your opponent can use this effect as long as this card remains face-up on the field.

So, this one should be kind of obvious however I think people may over look it and realize they need it after it's too late. With Fortune Ladies being a new possible big thing as well as Fish, you also have to look around and see that Lightsworns and DAD decks are running around and they are still putting up one hell of a fight. A list of cards you can expect to worry yourself with without this card sided or mained in your deck would be:

Fortune Lady Dark
Fortune Lady Light
Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth
Dark Armed Dragon
Judgment Dragon
Synchro Monsters
Destiny Hero - Malicious
Gladiator Beasts

These are all good examples of some things you would like to note cause without Royal Oppression they'll probably give you more trouble than you think. Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier will be mass released on November 10th if memory serves, a new level 6 Synchro Monster to worry about. People discussing Royal Oppression really shouldn't be needed but again I feel people will over look and NOT use this card when more than likely its a must in the side deck now. This being said I see Drain decks possibly doing something at the jump in Columbus.

Ladies and gents I could go on and on but these are the two main cards I see as possible Side Deck tech cards, and with how many searcher spells out there and how heavy this formats become on special summoning, the two above cards are what you need to start siding or at least try them out. There are new cards I'll probably review at some point as sort of an add on to this article as time passes. Im sure the Shonen Jump will provide us with other cards people have decided to tech in their side decks, and I'll be sure to review some of their decks on here as well as whoever wins the jump, assuming its not Blackwings. Anyways stay tuned for more articles coming soon!
